American Alphabet is the result of six months of continuous travel, with my dog Sparky as sole companion and navigator, around the United States in 2004, ending at the geographic heart of the United States. Firmly rooted in the photographic traditions established by the itinerant photographers of the 19th century, I pay tribute to the artists who have powerfully influenced my artistic development and made enormous imprints on contemporary art -Robert Frank, Gary Winogrand, Walker Evans, and John Steinbeck, James Agee, Simone de Beauvoir, and of course, Jack Kerouac. Edited from 6,700 photographs woven together with over 50 “maps” I created from every technology available from paint to the World Wide Web, I relish photography’s ability to create all things equal, while untangling the rich, diverse, fabric of America. Creating constellations of images which allow unexpected intersections between ideas and issues of democracy and equality in the midst of the Kerry/Bush Presidential elections of 2004.
